Visual Calendar

"Mom, is there school today?"

"Mom, who is picking me up from school today"

These are words coming from a kid, whose parents both work rotating days off.

Since our schedule is challenging enough for us to work out, I decided to create a visual calendar schedule for Jack.

I bought the magnetic white board from Costco months ago, in efforts to try and be green and not buy paper calendars.

I had the magnetic photo paper from several years ago, a promotion wal-mart photo studio gave me free with my photos. They saved me so much time vs. hand creating them.

Jack has already learned about calendars from Kindergarten.

This will also teach him skills for the future when he is an adult.
(I depend on My Homemade Excel Calendars).

Our reaction

Jack is still the same kid.
Knowing that he will finally get the help in school he needs is a huge relief.
Knowing that there are many programs our there for a kid like Jack.
Now we can finally pick up a book, and learn how Jack works, and what will work for him in terms of issues he is dealing with.

And, I wouldn't be human if I didn't say that there was a small cry out to God: "You must think I am a strong woman to be the Mother of a special needs child".

On the road to diagnosis

We finally had our long awaited meeting with the school.
In attendance were the principle, resource teacher, speech therapist, school occupation therapist, and the school physiologist.
They have been doing much testing and observing with Jack over the last few months to come to a conclusion.
We read over the report made by the teacher, and no doubt it described Jack.
They told us they could not label him. They are going to send the test results to the doctor and she will have to make the diagnosis.
They did however tell us that the results, showed signs of Jack having Autism, particularly associated with Asperger Syndrome.
